Why Some Former Athletes Are Unmotivated to Go to the Gym”
I remember when I sprained my ankle in a basketball game 4 years ago. The time of this writing is April 2007. It was extremely hard to get back on track. You sit on the bench and watch your co-players play. At times, I didn’t feel like going to practice. Hey! If you know what I mean, you cannot keep practicing on a bad ankle. You need to want it more, yes that championship, more than anyone else in order to get back on the court and execute. The gym became less of a priority, until that day I suddenly awake and said. I will not miss another game. This is the power of the mind. It forces us to take action, and do things beyond our means. I started to practice on the bad ankle, and prolonged my rehab time on my own, and before you know it, I was back on that court again. If you are reading this now, I don’t want you to feel that you are alone when you don’t want to go to the gym in order to change your body and stay healthy. Motivation will play a key factor, and you need to act on it.
Some athletes lose the presence of a coach, and they feel they can’t execute well enough at this point. Whether it has to do with living college or quitting the football team or swimming team. A coach is usually a good friend, yes she or he will be touch on you at times. In fact, most coaches are not soft, their job is to get you to where you want to be, your goals, therefore they have a job to do, a purpose, something to accomplish that will bring joy to the athletes and themselves. The sad thing today is that some athletes are really looking for that coaching presence again when they visit a health club or a gym. If they can’t find it there, they seldom feel unmotivated and unwilling to take action. Why is that? It’s very simple; it is rare to find a coach in a gym. Don’t get me wrong here, if you are a fitness professional reading this now as well. You know that there is a huge difference between teaching and coaching. A lot of personal trainers are teachers not coaches. Teachers teach, and Coaches strengthen the mind more.
Let’s focus on injuries here for a moment and the egotistical barrier that many athletes face which indeed jeopardize their motivation. Once an athletes get injured, whether it’s a shoulder dislocation, a torn ACL, or meniscus, or some form or Bursitis, shoulder impingement, just to cite a few. Some of these injuries can take a while to rehabilitate depends on the knowledge of the rehabber, which in this case can be a Health and Fitness Professional, Chiropractor, Physical Therapist, or Personal Trainers. Some athletes will get discourage fast and lose their focus, and some will not. Unfortunately some of them cannot cope with the time and the slow process, because they feel like they starting from scratch again, “A beginner”. This is the time to knock down the egotistical barrier. Many of them just quit, or feel unmotivated to go to the gym, because the rehab is taking too long.
Unfortunately it’s just the way the brain operates. Sometime we just have to relearn a skill and it could take time. If you were a muscle head, hard gainer, heavy hitter and over the years you gain 50 lbs of fat because you’ve been traveling so much or due to an injury. It is merely impossible to expect to go back to the same stage you were 5 years ago in a matter of a year. It is virtually impossible. These scenarios have former athletes very confuse. I’m only here to tell you that change is very possible, and sometimes you just need to stick to an action plan and let the professional you are working with take control and help you get to the next level.
If you are a struggling former athlete and you really need to get back into the game and start enjoying your life again as a sport man or sport woman. It is never too late. Let me tell you something, “Too late” is never an option for athlete and you already know that as former athlete. There are many ways you can go back into being great and superb once more. After work, find an intramural team of your choice, or a club team of your preferred sports and get involve with them. Another thing you can do is become a counselor for young kids who love the sport you love.
Find a health club or a specific gym that fits your standard and needs, and your budget and get a great and experience fitness professional to work with, specifically one who knows about the type of sports your like or enjoyed once. Whether you are a former athlete or a current athlete you do know that dietary supplements play a big role in our lifestyle. Terrell Owens couldn’t say it best for his super bowl 2004 against the tough patriots. He simply said, “ healthy supplementation and taking care of my body is what help me get to play in the super bowl along my rehab for my ankle.” A top star like Chuncey Billups say it even best, the fourth quarter is mine and mental toughness give me the edge over my opponents. If you want to still remain the best at your sport, don’t wait another day, get back into in, get involve.
